Overview

Did you know that the University of Iowa has had ties to more than 40 Pulitzer Prize winners since the late 1930's and in 1993 there were three winners from the university? The University of Iowa, known for its internationally acclaimed writing programs, has had a remarkable impact on 20th Century American Literature.

Who is this site for?
This course is for self-guided learners who are interested in good writing/literature and the University of Iowa. They enjoy reading, express themselves clearly in writing, and are efficient in basic computer skills. They enjoy the flexibility of online, self-paced learning. With no time limit to the course, students may continue publishing their reviews of creative material well into the future, whenever they finish a book.

Objectives

Participants will:

  • improve their knowledge of the Pulitzer Prize, its history, various categories, and how selections are made.

  • be introduced to the Pulitzer Prize winners affiliated with the University of Iowa, learn about their backgrounds, their ties to the university, and their work.

  • familiarize themselves with suggested readings, excerpts, book covers, and reviews of prize-winning works.

  • be able to write reviews of the literary works and publish them online, comparing and contrasting their responses to the work with those expressed by other reviewers.

Site Navigation

The main content for each section is in the largest column of the page.

The tabs at the top of the pages navigate to the main categories of the course. For example, when you click on the "Overview" link, you will be directed to the overview section of the course.

Clicking on a link in the top navigation will also cause the secondary pages to change. On the left column of all secondary pages you will find specific links to information contained in the main categories. The rule line in this section separates links that are on the page from links to pages that are in the main section that you are currently in. See sitemap for a flowchart of the site.

There are small links at the top and bottom left and right side of every page that indicate "before" and "after" pages according to the course flowchart. At the center and top of each main section you will find a "bread crumb" that indicates where you are within the site. The small arrow icon indicates which page you are on within the section and site.

Links at the bottom of every page are an alternate way to navigate through the site. The links will take you to pages in a linear sequence based on the sitemap.

Above the main section tabs you will find "Contact Us," "Feedback," and "Sitemap" links. Accessible any time as you move through the site, these links will assist with getting help, offering suggestions, or help you find your way through the course.

To leave the site and close the browser window, click on the red "EXIT" link located at the top left or bottom center of every page.
