Free food and parking. A great view of campus. Computer terminals with Internet access. (Sorry, no WiFi.) Most importantly, peace and quiet!
If you’ve gotta concentrate before finals start, try the fourth floor of the Levitt Center—that imposing white building that rests like a cruise ship on the north end of the Hancher parking lot. UI Alumni Association and UI Foundation staffers work here during the week, but S.T.A.T. has arranged to have the building open just for you over the weekend before exams begin.

Junior cinema major Casey Lincoln, from Creston, Iowa, couldn’t have been happier on April 5 when he walked into the Levitt Center with a zip-lock bag and a muddy medallion. After nine days of reading clues and sleuthing around campus, he was about ready to give up when he saw a bit of blue paint on the grass north of North Hall. Investigating further, he hit gold. He’d found it—the prize at the end of 2007’s “S.T.A.T.venger” hunt.
“I must have walked about 20 miles looking for the medallion,” Lincoln said, but the trek was worth it. He won season tickets for Hawkeye football and men’s basketball next year, a free S.T.A.T. membership, and a package of Hawkeye stuff—black and gold trinkets and memorabilia sure to incite the envy of the most enthusiastic Iowa fans. Dennette Hall is 50 bucks richer! Not only was she lucky enough to get away for the classic Spring Break experience—a trip to Florida with her best friends—but the photo she submitted of the trio of girls splashing in the waves off West Palm Beach impressed our judges. A sophomore from Davenport, Iowa, Dennette is majoring in biology-neuroscience and psychology. She said that she and friends Jacque Pollpeter and Jill Kitelinger had “an absolute blast, and we all hope we can do it again next year.
And, due to a lack of response in the Spring Break Essay Challenge, we decided to split that $50 prize and award $25 each to two runners-up in the photo contest. Congratulations, Anne Pastiak and Grant Gray. Click here to see their photos >> |

Life can be sweet! Especially when your assignment is to eat ice cream. Although there’s less than one point’s difference between the highest and lowest-rated shops, reviewer comments are telling.
What shop sells ice cream made in Iowa City? Where could you try blends as exotic as Rose Petal Irish Coffee Pomegranate? How can you use the word “hospital” in a review of an ice cream parlor? What establishment has employees serenading customers who leave a tip with humiliating songs? And where can you settle in to enjoy your ice cream and enjoy an atmosphere reminiscent of your grandmother’s living room? See what our five reviewers have to say>>

If you’ve got something to add about these ice cream parlors
or other establishments that didn’t make the list, let us know
with your “Talk

A Fine Mess: Despite the fierce rain, 250 S.T.A.T. members made it to Buffalo Wild Wings on April 25 for Spring Wings. So, how many free wings did a person get? Enough to leave them smiling! These S.T.A.T. members wiped the barbecue sauce off their fingers after we snapped the photo.
