I
am pleased to announce that the Phoenix Iowa Club has made a commitment
to support an educational scholarship award for a student planning on
attending the University of Iowa. We have made arrangements with the
University of Iowa Admissions and Financial Aid departments in order
to offer a $500 scholarship intended to assist a local Phoenix/Valley
of the Sun High School Senior to purchase books, supplies, or other
items needed as a college freshman at the University of Iowa.
You might ask why the award is named in memorial to Jason E. Marsh.
The person that receives this award will need to meet certain criteria
with respect to academics, community service, moral character, and ethical
strength. Jason Marsh was a fraternity brother of mine at the University
of Iowa from 1991-1995. We were best friends throughout our college
career and after moving to Arizona, spent a lot of time together here
in the valley. Jason was quite excited about assisting me with the revival
of the Phoenix Iowa Club and starting up the gamewatches again. Unfortunately,
he didn't get the chance. Tragically, Jason was diagnosed with colon
cancer back in August of this year. Even though the physicians tried
everything that they knew, the cancer was too widespread to treat and
Jason passed away last month. He was only 30 years old.
Jason was a person who lived each day like there was no tomorrow, so
I am confident that he is in a better place now knowing that he never
said "I can do it tomorrow". He never waited for tomorrow.
Jason was a dedicated student at Iowa, a true and loyal friend, and
an intense Hawkeye fan. We are hoping that this scholarship will assist
a young person to excel at the University of Iowa and give back to the
community like Jason did.
I can't begin to thank those of you who have donated to the Phoenix
Iowa Club this year for making this scholarship award possible. Those
of you who have signed up for the club membership at gamewatches, sent
me checks in the mail for your membership, donated to the raffles, and
those who have donated even more than the $10 membership fees, THANK
YOU! It is because of your generosity that we are able to help others
in the Valley who are in need. This will help one more person enjoy
the wonderful experience at the University of Iowa.
If membership continues to grow at the pace that we have seen recently,
we will try to add a second $500 scholarship. This is up to you and
our other Iowa Alumni in the Phoenix area. Thanks again for your support.
