Children Pain StudyMcCarthy, Kleiber & Street work on children's pain study
(Nurse.com, April 7)

Researchers at the University of Iowa are developing a system to help children better cope with pain during difficult medical procedures. The system uses Web-based software to advise nurses on the best way to distract children from painful procedures, such as reading a book, watching a video, talking, or playing a game. The research team, led by professors ANN MARIE McCARTHY, CHARMAINE KLEIBER and NICK STREET in the Tippie College of Business, developed the software after analyzing data from a multisite research study that observed parents distracting their children who were undergoing painful procedures. Hybrid ComputerUI research contributes to hybrid computer materials
(Science Daily, April 3)

A modern computer contains two different types of components: magnetic components, which perform memory functions, and semiconductor components, which perform logic operations. MICHAEL FLATTÉ of the University of Iowa will lead a multi-university research team, working to combine these two functions in a single hybrid material. This new material would allow seamless integration of memory and logical functions and is expected to permit the design of devices that operate at much higher speeds and use considerably less power than current electronic devices. The research grant was awarded to the University of Iowa as part of a multi-university research initiative and is funded by a $6.5 million grant from the Department of Defense. More >>

TVUI study shows impact of TV viewing on teens
(Evening News and Tribune, April 2)

In 1921, while plowing a field in rural Idaho, 14-year-old Philo Farnsworth had an idea that led to one of the most important inventions of the 20th century: the television. Today, the average American household has three to five TVs and the average teen spends 23 hours a week watching them. In fact, research by the UNIVERSITY OF IOWA has found that next to family, television has the greatest social impact on the lives of teens. In an average year, a teenager will spend more time watching TV than in a classroom. The EVENING NEWS is based in Jeffersonville, Ind., and THE TRIBUNE is based in New Albany, Ind. More >>

Kuusisto: legally blind governor can lead
(New York Times, March 14)

STEPHEN KUUSISTO, who teaches creative nonfiction writing at the University of Iowa, describes the challenges that David Paterson will face as governor of New York, but also the special strengths and skills he will bring to this leadership position as a legally blind individual. Paterson will not only become the third African-American governor since Reconstruction, he will also be the first legally blind chief state executive, Kuusisto writes in an op-ed contribution that explores how he believes it's a safe bet that Paterson's visual impairment will be harder for the public to understand than his race. UI's Gaffney opposes use of HGH, testosterone
(Sports Illustrated, March 11)

In an article exploring steroids in America and how the culture of enhancement extends far beyond sports, Jack McCallum writes that we're entering a brave new world. A serious academic and research war rages between those who say that HGH and testosterone are natural substances that need to be replenished when the body's supply runs low and those who proclaim such a philosophy as quackery. "There are very basic questions we're trying to get answers to," says GARY GAFFNEY, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Iowa's College of Medicine. He is against doctors prescribing HGH and testosterone for anti-aging reasons, and even dislikes the term. "Is aging a disease? Should it be treated?" Gaffney believes there hasn't been nearly enough testing on the potential long-term effects of HGH and testosterone-replacement therapies. More >>

Stalking the Wild PCB (Iowa Engineer)

When Keri Hornbuckle talks about her research on the fate and transport of pollutants in the Great Lakes, the professor of civil and environmental engineering leans forward, gestures broadly, and begins to pepper her speech with words like "opportunity," "pride," and "public good." Her own commitment to the common good is reflected in her research on persistent organic pollutants, including the synthetic musk fragrances added to many household products, fluorinated compounds used as surface protectants such as Scotchgard(tm), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a class of about 200 chemicals used widely in the manufacture of paints, caulking compounds, and electrical transformers. Remarkable People: Mark Knabel

A chance meeting introduced Mark Knabel to the work that would change his life. It was the year 2000, and Knabel had taken his family to Rome for the Great Jubilee, a Catholic celebration of faith and forgiveness. There he met a Lupita Assad, a nurse organizing medical mission trips to poor communities around the world. "I happened to run into her among three million people," recalls Knabel, a Sheboygan, Wis., dermatologist and 1979 University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine graduate. "I have to think there was some divine intervention involved." More >>
