FLOOD RECOVERY UPDATE

Flooding forced UI writing programs to become improvisational artists

Most writers are fastidious about the details: They choose every word carefully, and their works are developed through a long, laborious process of revision and refinement through multiple drafts. But this summer the University of Iowa International Writing Program and the Iowa Summer Writing Festival were transformed into improvisational artists as the flood of 2008 invaded the campus. emptyCampus adapts to summer housing needs

Mother Nature threw a wrench into the university’s residence hall schedules in the form of a 500-year flood, but summer program participants, whether junior high or college students, adapted to spur-of-the-moment changes, as did those working behind the scenes. More >>

Leadership study suggests age may have helped Obama, hurt Clinton

Hillary Clinton prides herself on experience, but she may have had a better shot at the White House if she were younger, a University of Iowa study suggests. The research suggests that Americans expect women to reach their peak performance as leaders at age 43, four years before men's perceived peak at age 47. They also believe women's contributions at work start to decline at 59.7, compared to age 61.3 for men, according to the nationally representative online survey of 1,996 adults. More >>

White shares how Pollock, other art saved
(Wall Street Journal, July 30)

There's nothing here but a few two-by-fours attached to a massive expanse of drywall. Then I see it, a small white plaque with black lettering that reads "Jackson Pollock / American, 1912-1956 / Mural 1943 / Oil on Canvas . . ."  "This is where it was," says PAMELA WHITE, the interim director of the now vacant University of Iowa Museum of Art. "I came back here after the flood, when the museum was empty, and I wept -- it's heartbreaking." Thanks to the efforts of Ms. White and her staff, some 13,000 works of art were saved last month when the Iowa River flooded this lovely campus, overcoming much of the UI museum. More >>

UI nursing alumna saved Iraqi civilian's life
(Military.com, July 14)

Navy Cmdr. Pamela Harvey -- who earned a nursing degree from the UNIVERSITY OF IOWA before attending medical school -- was serving in Iraq as an emergency room physician when an Iraqi man's vitals became unstable. The man, who was severely injured when a suicide truck bomb exploded outside a mosque, was bleeding from behind one eye, causing pressure to his brain. If they didn't perform surgery immediately, he would die. So Harvey went to work right there on the floor. "Knowing that I've impacted somebody's life that way is better than any paycheck," she said. Remarkable People: Don Gurnett

University of Iowa physics and astronomy professor Don Gurnett perhaps sealed his destiny in his first year as an undergraduate at Iowa—when he marched into James Van Allen’s office and asked for work. The year was 1958, and the young electrical engineering student was unfazed—excited, rather—by the recent celebrity of Van Allen, the renowned Iowa physicist who had just been part of the successful launch of Explorer 1. The first American satellite had carried onboard an experiment designed by Van Allen. More >>

Iowa students build business, get help from Okoboji Entrepreneurial Institute

John Slump and Jared Garfield knew they had a good idea for a new medical product, a device that prevents worker and patient exposure to hazardous medications. They knew there was a market for their product -- not only does it increase safety, it also improves productivity and reduces overhead. They knew how to design and build it, too. But they still had a lot of questions. Who would build it? How long would it take and how much would it cost? How would it be distributed and marketed? Who would sell it? More >>
