Presidential Search Update

The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, has initiated a second search for a University of Iowa president. David Johnsen, dean of the UI College of Dentistry, was named to head the committee. The first search ended when regents voted Nov. 17, 2006 to reject the four finalists. Subsequently, five campus groups -- including the UI Faculty Council, Staff Council and Student Government – cast votes of no confidence in the Board of Regents; Regent Tom Bedell of Spirit Lake resigned; and the UI’s deans called upon the regents to launch a new search with a smaller committee made up of UI leaders and chaired by a respected faculty member, with the goal of naming a successor to former UI President David Skorton by July 1, 2007. For information on the new search committee, the position description and other information, visit the UI’s Presidential Search Website at http://www.uiowa.edu/uipresidentialsearch/

Ponseti Credited With Clubfoot Treatment
(Chicago Tribune, Dec. 19)

The treatment of clubfoot, which affects about 5,000 newborns annually, has undergone a radical shift in the last 10 years. Before the mid-1990s, a standard treatment was major surgery that left many young patients with long-term orthopedic problems. Now that has changed dramatically, thanks mostly to a non-surgical approach called the Ponseti method, named for University of Iowa clubfoot specialist DR. IGNACIO PONSETI. By applying a series of plaster casts for a period from a few weeks to a few months, doctors trained in Ponseti's technique can correct the majority of clubfoot cases, according to studies published since 2000 in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics and elsewhere.
