The University of Iowa has expanded its career services program to help alumni build their careers no matter where in the country they live. 3. UI Business Professor Studies Lousy Customer Service
No, it's not just your imagination. Customer service really does stink. "All measures of customer service and customer satisfaction have declined significantly, especially in the past 10 years," said Lopo Rego, an assistant professor of marketing in the University of Iowa's Tippie College of Business who studies customer service and customer satisfaction.

5. UI Hosts Mississippi River Symposium On Preeminence Of Water
The University of Iowa hosted a Mississippi River Symposium -- a discussion about the importance of water in our physical and intellectual lives -- Oct. 28-30 at the UI's new Art Building West in Iowa City and the Grand Harbor Resort on the Mississippi River in Dubuque. The symposium was organized to engage scientists, writers, scholars and policymakers in conversation about the relationship between water and land, rivers and seas, and human society and nature. Organized by the UI Office of the Vice President for Research and the UI International Writing Program (IWP), the conference and the book of essays that will result from it are intended to provoke a broad exchange of views about water and human affairs.

9. 'Unwanted One' Became One Of Africa's Most Influential Writers
Ken Bugul, the pen name of Senegal's Mariètou M'baye Biléoma, means, in the Wolof language, "the person no one wants." That name is increasingly ironic, because she has become one of Africa's most influential literary figures, profiled in "500 Great Books by Women" and an inspiration to a whole new generation of writers, particularly women. And this fall, as a further indication of how much she is wanted, she has represented her country -- flamboyantly with her colorful dress and striking visage - in the University of Iowa International Writing Program.

10. In Iowa, Courtoisie Transforms His Bark Into The Music Of Poetry
Uruguayan writer Raphael Courtoisie tackles many literary genres simultaneously. He is a prolific Spanish-language novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter, essayist, poet and television serial writer, plus he teaches college courses in screenwriting. And when he learned that he would be in residence at the University of Iowa International Writing Program this fall, he decided to stretch even further, writing a collection of poems in the English language for the first time.

1. Squire: West Now Key For Democrats ( Denver Post, Nov. 9)
The Nov. 7 election results suggest that Democrats might want to stop sipping sweet tea and start donning cowboy hats if they want to keep winning national elections because the West has become a key region in the party's quest for support. Political scientists said it does make sense for Democrats to stop trying to win over the Deep South and look at themes that have worked in the West. "Democrats can look to the mountain West as a place they might make a successful appeal more so than the Deep South," said PEVERILL SQUIRE, political science professor at the University of Iowa.

2. UI Residence Hall Students Choose Cage-Free Eggs (Inside Higher Ed, Nov. 6)
At the UNIVERSITY OF IOWA, students chose cage-free eggs after a successful trial run that started in the spring, deciding in October to put their money where their mouths are. The Associated Residence Halls, the student governing group for residential life, voted to support the continuing use of cage-free eggs on campus, a decision that will tack about $5 onto students' annual room and board bills, said STEVE PARROTT, a university spokesman. "That's certainly not an unreasonable amount to ask for so many benefits," said Will McBride, president of the university's Farm Animal Welfare Network and a first-year dental student who spearheaded the student movement as an undergraduate. "Cage production is by far one of the cruelest forms of factory farming that is practiced today."

3. Brown Comments On Driving With Cell Phones (WQAD-TV, Nov. 3)
It's a phenomenon most drivers are guilty of-- picking up that cell phone (or worse yet-- texting) while behind the wheel of a moving car. But before thinking that quick chat or quicker message is harmless, a recent report out of the University of Utah urges drivers to think again. "Driving while on a cell phone is as bad as driving drunk," said TIMOTHY BROWN, a director of the National Advanced Driving Simulator at the University of Iowa. He and other researchers there have performed hundreds of tests that support the Utah-study's theory that using a phone from behind the wheel is basically like driving after having two or three alcoholic beverages. WQAD is based in Moline, Ill.

4. Kinnick Stadium Noted As Loudest (Wall Street Journal, Oct. 27)
While other schools may boast larger stadiums or louder crowds, the Iowa Hawkeyes showed the biggest difference among major football schools between their home record and road record, a gap quantified by Home Turf Differential. (HTD). HTD takes a team's winning percentage at home over the past five seasons and subtracts its winning percentage on the road over the same period. The larger the differential, the stronger the home-field effect. According to the computations, KINNICK STADIUM at the University of Iowa is college football's biggest hurdle for visitors. Between 2001 and 2005, the Hawkeyes had a 29-3 record there (.906), one of the country's top home marks. However, the road record for Kirk Ferentz's squad has been just 13-12 over that time period, resulting in a Home Turf Differential of .386. (Subscription required to access full article.)

1. Bridging The Digital Divide (fyi)
It's a busy time for the University's WiderNet Project. Staff and volunteers are preparing to ship 400 refurbished computers to Africa. Launched in 2000, the WiderNet Project, based in the UI School of Library and Information Science in the Graduate College, brings technology to developing countries. Since 2001, with help from some 60 volunteers from around campus, the project has donated more than 1,000 computers for use at universities in Africa. But all the computers in the world aren't worth much if their users can't afford access to the wealth of information that has been digitized and made available on the Internet.
