Iowa Black Alumni Association
History
A group of Iowa alumni and friends gathered at an informal picnic
in 1963 at the Rockford, Illinois, in the home of the late McKinley
"Deacon" Davis. The socializing, renewing of friendships,
and the reliving of the "good ole" school days at the University in
Iowa City during the early 50s was so meaningful and enjoyable that
the group agreed to organize on a more formal basis and become the Iowa
Black Alumni Association (IBAA).
The IBAA has grown from an original group of about 10 couples to an
active membership of more than 300. Attending the University is the
one thing most of our members have in common, especially during the
era of the 50s, 60s, and early 70s, when our similar experiences at
a prestigious university kept us rather close-knit and together. Over
the years, friends have also recognized the special relationships and
unique character our group has developed and joined us in our efforts.
Friends of Iowa alums are a vital part of our success.
Our own pride and commitment has kept us functioning together over
the years for the purpose of assisting the university in any way that
we can, so it can continue to provide quality services to all students.
Our Hall of Honor and yearly scholarship fund are two
major projects supported by the University of Iowa Alumni Association,
the University of Iowa Foundation, and the UI administration. During
the early 90s, IBAA operated a concession stand at every Iowa home football
game to support our scholarship programjust one example of how
affiliate groups can cooperate with the communiversity and the many
fine people who make it great.
In 1986, the IBAA became an officially recognized member of the University
Alumni family. In 1997, the IBAA entered into a collaborative agreement
with the UI Admissions Office to assist in the recruitment of minority
students. "Preview Iowa" helps expose African-American high school students
in Chicago and Kansas City to opportunities and scholarships at the
University of Iowa.
Our executive committee once was responsible for all business and
planning of annual reunion activities. However, as our mission expanded
and the group grew, the committee evolved into the Board of Directors.
