Devra Dimpfl Callaghan

Devra, when did you graduate from the University of Iowa and what did you study while you were there?

I graduated in December, 1988 with a BS in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Did you grow up in Iowa?

Grow up? Who said anything about growing up? I was however, raised in the Chicagoland area in a western suburb called Glen Ellyn.

What did you enjoy most during your time at Iowa?

I enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities and organizations.

What was your favorite class while at Iowa?

I can't remember the name of the class, but it was taught by Al Talbott and examined the manner in which journalism and journalists are portrayed in mass media, specifically films such as "All the President's Men" and "Broadcast News." It was a great class and he was a great professor.

When did you move to Indianapolis and what kind of work do you do?

My husband and I moved to Indianapolis 7 years ago and we love it. I am the Vice President, Director of Account Services for Pearson McMahon Fletcher England, one of the largest advertising agencies in the city.

What do you enjoy most about Indianapolis?

There are so many aspects of Indianapolis that I enjoy, it's hard to name just one. I love that Indianapolis is a Midwestern city with a little bit of southern hospitality. In a very short time, my husband and I felt very well connected and involved in the city's events and organizations. We've become true Hoosiers and root for all of Indiana's professional and collegiate teams - unless Purdue or Indiana are playing Iowa!

Tell us about your spouse and any children.

My husband Bob graduated from Iowa State in 1989, so the rivalry is pretty intense during both football and basketball season. Our son Owen will be 2 in January and is already put in the middle of the Iowa/Iowa State wars. Daddy is trying to brainwash him with tails of the Cyclone's superiority, while Mommy has spoiled him with a stuffed Herky that plays the Iowa fight song and an adorable Iowa sweatshirt!

Have you been back to Iowa City recently? What changes have you seen in the city and university?

Unfortunately, its been several years since we've been back in Iowa City. However, the last time I was there, I was happy to see that The Airliner still has the best popcorn and cold beer in town!

How can the Indianapolis Iowa Club benefit local alumni?

As a transplant, I think the local alumni club can help introduce people new to the city and make them feel welcome. It's always hard to find a good dry cleaner, great take-out food and a responsible babysitter. Why not turn to a fellow Hawkeye for a helping hand?

Any other comments?

Any Iowa grads looking for a job in advertising, give me a call.
