The UI Alumni Association presents the third installment of the Modern Love Series:
Negotiating Legitimacy and Recognition for Same-Sex Couples
RESCHEDULED
How do members of same-sex marriages negotiate legitimacy and recognition for their families? How do women and men make sense of the multiple identities they can face in same-sex relationships? What are the cultural realities of gender roles in same-sex relationships?
Join us on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Prairie Lights Books as Dr. Ellen Lewin discusses these issues and research exploring community and morality in same-sex commitment ceremonies. Copies of Dr. Lewin’s books, Gay Fatherhood and Recognizing Ourselves, will be available for purchase at the event. Refreshments will be provided; wine available for purchase.
Presented by Dr. Ellen Lewin:
Dr. Lewin earned her master’s degree and doctorate from Stanford University and teaches in the departments of anthropology and gender, women’s, and sexuality studies at the University of Iowa. She has written multiple books about same-sex marriages, family issues, and commitment ceremonies. Her major research interests center on motherhood, reproduction, and sexuality, particularly as these are played out in American cultures.
