By Chance and Design: A History of the Pentacrest

Bridge over Iowa River with Pentacrest in background, The University of Iowa, between 1924 and 1930

Everything has its season, and the Pentacrest is no exception.

For UI students throughout the decades, the center of campus has been a place to weep, laugh, mourn, and dance—in times of war and peace. On these grounds, Hawkeyes have gathered to remember everyone from President Abraham Lincoln to the victims of the 9/11 attacks, music lovers have come to enjoy the annual tuba Christmas concerts, and protesters have rallied against the Vietnam and Iraq wars.

Visitors to the UI Main Library can see all of the university's changing seasons in "By Chance and By Design: A History of the Pentacrest," on display in the North Exhibition Lobby through June. Featuring photographs, architectural drawings, and newspapers, the exhibit documents the Pentacrest's evolution from a government capital to a community gathering place.
