Patrick D. Fischer, a UI physics and astronomy major, recently served as an intern at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and is the recipient of the National Space Grant Foundation's John Mather Nobel Scholarship, which includes a travel grant to present research at conferences.

Laurie A. Fiscella*, 11MSW, is a school social worker for the Heartland Area Education Agency in Johnston, Iowa.

Lauren E. Masching*, 11BSN, is a registered nurse for Edward Hospital in Naperville, Ill. Jennifer Silverman, 11MFA, a poet and playwright, won the Ploughshare literary journal's 2012 Emerging Writer's Contest in poetry for her series Bath Poems.

Michael B. Abbott, 05MBA, 05JD, is a partner with the Faegre Baker Daniels law firm in Des Moines.

Jonathan J. Babineaux, 05BA, a defensive tackle for the Atlanta Falcons, is his organization's representative for the United Way Team NFL initiative and has recruited more than 700 volunteers to read, tutor, and mentor in area schools.

Jarod A. Deverell*, 07BBA, is a commercial credit officer for Hills Bank in Iowa City.

W. Spencer Gillis, 04BA, 06MA, a director and screenwriter, received an invitation to the 2013 Sundance Film Festival for his narrative short film GUN.

Katherine E. Hansen*, 05BS, is a fourth-year surgical resident at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey's School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, N.J.

Jonathan P. Vande Geest, 00BSE, an assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., received the 2013 Y.C. Fung Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for his promise in the field of bioengineering.

Pete L. Illian, 95BBA, vice president of global merchant marketing for Discover Financial Services in Riverwoods, Ill., was named one of Chicago's 2012 "40 Under 40" leaders by Crains Chicago Business magazine.

Nathan W. Lamb, 97BBA, an attorney with the Ulmer & Berne law firm in Chicago, has been selected as a 2013 "Illinois Rising Star" by Illinois Super Lawyers.

Lisa M. Woodbury Malina, 93BBA, president of the Malina and Company accounting practice in Skokie, Ill., recently was honored as one of 2012's "Women to Watch" by the Illinois CPA Society and American Institute of CPAs.

Joe R. Nugent*, 92BA, 05MA, is a proposal writer for the Pearson learning company in Iowa City.

Christopher J. Pawelski*, 90MA, a farmer for Pawelski Farms in Goshen, N.Y., appeared on the December 2012 cover of Onion World magazine as a nationally and internationally known advocate for farming issues.

Bruce E. Rowe*, 90BSE, 94MD, 94F, is medical staff president at Columbia St. Mary's Hospital-Ozaukee in Mequon, Wis., and Laura A. Rowe*, 90BS, 92MA, is director of recruitment and marketing for Lumen Christi Catholic School in Mequon, Wis.

Katie Woodhouse-Igler*, 94BBA, is a senior consultant for Deloitte & Touche, a professional services firm in Boca Raton, Fla.

Kathleen C. Campbell, 89PhD, a professor and director of audiology research at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale, Ill., recently received the university's Inventor of the Year Award for her research on agents that could protect against hearing loss and other side effects of cancer therapies.

Carmen P. Ciricillo, 85BBA, a national stand-up comedian whose routine focuses on life as a contractor, recently released the album Real Construction Rock, featuring songs such as "Real Plumber" and "The Book of OSHA."

Carla Koppes Cleary, 85BS, 87MPT, assistant director of outpatient rehabilitation and the Hand Management Center at St. Dominic's Hospital in Jackson, Miss., received the 2012 Ben Piazzi Outstanding Therapist Award from the Mississippi chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association.

Thomas M. Hartwell, 85MBA, 85JD, is a circuit court clerk for Kane County, Ill.

Jan Hadwen Hubbell, 80MFA, a writer and English professor at Colorado Mountain College in Aspen, Colo., recently earned the Best Comedy Award at the Los Angeles Film and Script Festival for her screenplay A Perfect Gentleman.

Jane L. Morris, 81BS, is director of special projects for the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, Ariz.

Carmen Krampe Nugent*, 88BS, is a UI financial aid counselor in Iowa City.

Robert Kelly Ortberg, 82BSME, is president of Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids.

Kristina Van Liew, 88BBA, institutional consultant and first vice president of the Merrill Lynch Private Banking and Investment Group in Chicago, recently received the Chairman's Award from the city's Executive Service Corps for her service to the organization, which provides consulting to nonprofits.

K. K. Choi, 77MS, 80PhD, a UI mechanical engineering professor, is a co-winner of the university's 2012 Graduate College Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award in mathematical and physical sciences and engineering. E.

Michael Greaves*, 70BBA, 73JD, is a general counsel for MB Investments in Ankeny, Iowa.

John S. Olmsted*, 72BS, 75DDS, who recently retired after 35 years in clinical endodontics, is an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Patrick Riley*, 76MA, retired this past July after 20 years as an academic advisor and instructor at the University of North Dakota in Williston, N.D.

1960s

Gabriel Echavez-Aldape*, 66MS, a tenured professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City, received the National Prize in Teaching from the National Association of Hydraulics in Mexico.

Larry L. Enyart, 66BA, president of LEA Architects in Phoenix, Ariz., received a 2012 Presidential Commendation Award and his company earned 2012 Sustainable Firm of the Year from the American Institute of Architects Arizona.

1950s

Lewis P. Lipsitt, 57PhD, a professor emeritus of psychology, medical sciences, and human development at Brown University in Providence, R.I., recently earned the American Humane Association's Vincent De Francis Award for lifetime achievement as a child development pioneer in the field of pediatric psychology.

Gerhard Loewenberg, UI professor emeritus of political science and director of its Comparative Legislative Research Center in Iowa City, has written a memoir titled Moved by Politics: 12 Episodes in an Academic Life.
