The Fossil Tree

A 280-million-year-old fossilized tree will find new roots at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. Collected just south of Pella in the late 1970s by UI Professor Jeff Schabilion, the 16-ton specimen predates the dinosaurs. According to Schabilion, when the tree was alive, it stood roughly 75 feet tall and was surrounded by a tropical swamp.
