Bumper Car

I found myself in a slight fender bender the other day, returning to work from my lunch break. Nothing major, just a tap really, but the impact sent my car lurching back and then forward. I wasn't hurt (neither was my car!), but the thing is, I'm six months pregnant and ultimately decided I should call my doctor and report the incident.

I was told to report to the UI Labor and Delivery unit for up to four hours of monitoring! They intended to strap me up to a non-stress test and make sure the baby's heart rate showed no signs of distress. I was reluctant to go - with two other small children and family obligations at home, four hours seemed like an eternity. But I knew it was better to be safe than sorry.

My point is: I am always impressed by the care I receive at the UI Hospitals and Clinics, whether it's in the Family Care Center, the pediatrics department, or in Labor and Delivery. The other night, I was first seen by a friendly and eager medical student, then a resident and attending physician - all of whom offered compassion, concern, and wonderful care. I'm happy to help facilitate the education of the next generation of doctors, which is why I didn't mind answering the same questions a few times over. Teaching, after all, is an important part of UIHC's mission, and I am reminded of that fact during many of my visits.

Oh, and everything at my most recent appointment turned out just fine!

Wedding Reflections
I recently attended the wedding of two UI grads. It was a classic Iowa City wedding held on the lawn in front of Danforth Chapel with a beautiful backdrop of the buildings on the Pentacrest. For their guest book, they used a copy of Reflections, a pictorial book of campus. I thought it was a very creative way to tie the University of Iowa into their reception, and guests loved selecting different pages to write their greetings on. If you know of any UI grads getting married this summer, you should order a copy of Reflections - what a wonderful way to reflect on a special place and a special time.
