On Friday, June 11, friends and former colleagues of Rusty Barcelo, a former UI assistant dean and provost for academic affairs, gathered at the Latino and Native American Cultural Center for food, fellowship, and to share memories and stories. Rusty was in town to receive the UI Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Award. Throughout an illustrious 20-year career in academic administration - first at UI and then at the University of Washington and the University of Minnesota - Rusty has proved herself a visionary leader for transformational change who has impacted equality and diversity issues within the university community.

By now, you have probably read the June digital-only issue of Iowa Alumni Magazine, which focuses on the commitment that the UI has made to environmental sustainability. Yesterday, I read an article in the Daily Iowan about another way that the university is helping this cause.

UI engineering professor Jerry Schnoor and two of his students are currently in Louisiana, studying the effect of the Gulf oil spill on the marshlands there and determining whether the area can be restored using native grasses and plants. To read more about their project, click here.
