Hawkeye on Wheels: Jeff Brown

By Aneeta Brown
Jeff Brown

Since completing his first RAGBRAI in 2002, Jeff Brown, 05BS, of Henderson, Nevada, has logged more than 25,000 miles on his bike. He's also become one of fewer than 200 people nationwide to earn a pro mechanic license from the USA Cycling organization. Having completed two years of work experience as a bike mechanic, 40 hours of classroom instruction, a 100-question written exam, and a four-day mechanic clinic, he's now eligible to repair bikes during pro races, national championships, and Olympic trials. Now a high school math teacher in Las Vegas, as well as a competitive cyclist in his spare time, Brown often resorts to pedal power in the car-centric city. When he wears his old Hawkeye racing jersey, he's frequently recognized by the many Iowans living in or visiting Las Vegas, who greet him with happy shouts of "Go, Hawks."
