Iowa hosted No. 1 Miami in the first night game ever played in Kinnick Stadium. The university had installed collapsible goalposts in the stadium to prevent injuries and save money, but they weren’t in danger that opening night, when the Hurricanes blew past the Hawks, 24-7.

The Hawks finished the season with a 5-7 overall record, just missing a berth in the 1992 Copper Bowl in Tucson.

Despite a less than stellar season, senior center Mike Devlin received several postseason accolades. The only Big Ten player to be named a Kodak first team all-American by the American College Football Coaches Association, Devlin was named first team all-Big Ten and Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year by conference coaches.
