In January, the UI Board in Control of Athletics voted unanimously to ban smoking in all areas of Kinnick Stadium, including the restrooms, concourses, and the press box. On the field that fall, it was a tale of two seasons. The Hawks lost five straight conference games, falling to Penn State, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan State, before getting their act together. The worm turned on October 30 at home, when Iowa snapped its longest losing streak since 1978 to beat Purdue, 27-16. Iowa ended the regular season with four straight wins, over Purdue, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, and Minnesota. Iowa’s 21-3 win over Minnesota in the season finale not only assured an invitation to the Alamo Bowl, but was also win No. 200 in the coaching career of Hayden Fry. December 31
