October 19
Playing in Beaver Stadium in Happy Valley, the Hawks watched the Nittany
Lions return the opening kickoff the length of the field for a touchdown
and a 7-0 lead. It wasn’t only the rain that made things look pretty
bleak for the Iowa team, but then Hawkeye junior Tim Dwight turned on
the afterburners for an 83-yard punt return to tie the score. With Sedrick
Shaw nursing injuries, junior Tavian Banks rushed for 116 yards in 26
attempts and the winning touchdown. The victory was Iowa’s first
over a top ten ranked team since a 54-28 win over the fifth-ranked Fighting
Illini in 1990.
November 16
It didn’t matter that the Badgers averaged 27 points and 222 yards
rushing per game when Wisconsin came into Kinnick Stadium. Iowa’s
defense was awesome. At halftime, Wisconsin had only two first downs
and 35 total yards rushing. Playing his final game in Kinnick Stadium,
Sedrick Shaw celebrated his birthday by scoring on three touchdown runs
and tying Ronnie Harmon’s career touchdown record of 32. Iowa won
the game, 31-0.
December 29
The Hawkeyes were back in Texas for another Alamo Bowl, this one to
be fought against the Texas Tech Red Raiders and their fine rushing
attack.
But, for some reason, Texas abandoned its running game in favor of
the pass and laid a great big goose egg in the end zone. Final score:
Iowa, 27; Texas Tech, zip.
