Iowa vs. Illinios 1997September 13
Senior running back Tavian Banks broke a 29-year-old school record during Iowa’s 54-16 victory over Tulsa. Banks rushed for 314 yards to top Iowa’s all-time single-game rushing list, surpassing former Kansas City Chief Ed Podolak, 69BBA, who recorded 286 yards in Iowa’s 1986 victory over Northwestern. Play-by-play announcer Gary Dolphin remembers that it was radio analyst Podolak, up in the broadcast booth, who was the first to give Banks a standing ovation.

October 18
If only the second half could have been like the first, when Tim Dwight returned a punt 61 yards for a score on the final play, and the Hawks jumped to a 21-7 lead. But Michigan quarterback Brian Griese turned things around after halftime and defeated Iowa before 106,505 fans in Michigan Stadium. Final score: Michigan 28, Iowa 24.

November 1
After Purdue became the first team of the season to score against Iowa in the opening quarter, the Hawks bounced back for a convincing 37-17 victory.

November 22
Playing his last game at home against Minnesota, Tim Dwight finished the day with four receptions for 29 yards and an Iowa record 2,220 career receiving yards. In his final punt return, he electrified the crowd by avoiding several would-be tacklers on the way to a 44-yard touchdown. Dwight set a Big Ten record of five career punt return touchdowns and became the conference leader in career punt return yards with 1,086. The Hawks won the game, 31-0.

December 31
When the Arizona State Sun Devils squelched the Hawks’ ninth-ranked offense, Iowa’s second trip to the Sun Bowl wasn’t as much fun as the first. Final score, 17-7, with Arizona State on top.
