Taking over a Hawkeye team that finished
the 1998 season last in the Big Ten in rushing and total offense, Kirk
Ferentz faced
a tough schedule, including a home opener against longtime powerhouse
Nebraska, along with road games at Iowa State, Michigan State, Ohio State,
and Wisconsin. At season’s end, the Hawks had tallied only one
win, a 24-0 victory over Northern Illinois.
Recently inducted into the College Football Hall
of Fame, Hawkeye quarterback coach and Iowa legend Chuck Long left
the Iowa coaching team to join
Bobby Stoops’ coaching staff at the University of Oklahoma.
