Scoring on its first drive, Iowa completely controlled the action on
offense and defense in defeating Kent State 51-0 to open the season.
Placekicker Nate Kaeding looked good before the hometown crowd, making
all six extra point attempts and hitting three field goals. He set
a school record for kicking points in a game with 15.
September 29
Playing for the first time in three weeks due to the terrorist attacks
on the East Coast, the Hawks drove 90 yards against Penn State for
a touchdown on their second possession and never trailed. After the
Nittany Lions closed to within 21-11 in the third quarter, Iowa’s
Nate Kaeding added a 47-yard field goal for Iowa’s final points.
Final score, 24-18.
October 20
Iowa’s offense scored on the first four drives of the game against
Indiana and gained 454 yards on only 50 offensive plays, averaging more
than nine yards per play. Meanwhile, Bob Sanders led the Iowa defense
with 25 tackles and won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Iowa won the game, 42-28.
November 17
On a balmy day in November with near 70-degree temperatures, Iowa scored
on its first six possessions in Kinnick Stadium on the way to a 42-24
victory over Minnesota. It was the final home game for 19 Hawkeye seniors.
Members of the 1981 Hawkeye Big Ten Championship football team were
in town celebrating the 20th anniversary of Iowa’s trip to the
1982 Rose Bowl and also witnessed the game.
December 29
After a three-year hiatus, Iowa was back in bowl game action, taking
on Texas Tech once again in its third trek to the Alamo Bowl in San
Antonio. The Hawks won the game, 19-16, with placekicker Nate Kaeding
responsible for four field goals and 12 of Iowa’s points.
