Dentistry College Class Photos Collection

By Shelbi Thomas
1907 College of Dentistry class composite.

When the UI College of Dentistry began its tradition of collecting graduate portraits for class photo boards, none of the pictured students flashed their pearly whites. Eight solemn Caucasian men made up the class of 1883 — all but one donning a beard or mustache.

More than a century later, smiles abound, facial hair is rare, and graduating classes are larger and more diverse. Such changes in the college's history can be traced in the UI Libraries' Dentistry College Class Photos Collection. The digital anthology features most class photo boards and thousands of individual photos taken between 1883 and 1956. Users can either browse the site or search the pictures by name or class year — tools especially helpful for those seeking a family member.

Spanning from the school's humble beginnings to its rise to national acclaim, the preserved photos make a fitting tribute for the college's 125th anniversary this year.
