Scholarship Dinner: This annual event promises to be one of the best yet, so please plan to join us on Saturday evening, May 2nd for a Blues-N-BBQ evening to include great music and tasty ribs and chicken and all the trimmings. We look forward to welcoming Vince Nelson, President of the University of Iowa Alumni Association, and his wife, Pam Nelson. The packets were mailed to club members, other contacts and alumni in Memphis and the surrounding area, so check your mail for the cover letter, dinner brochure and raffle tickets. Please see the attached letter and brochure for full details.
Annual Hawkeye Open Golf Tourney: Dust off your clubs and come out and join us for this annual fundraiser on Sunday, May 17th. No experience needed – just a desire to have some fun! Of course, you might just win one of the prizes for best score, closest to the pin, longest drive, or one of the many door prizes. We’ll be at the Forest Hill Golf Course just north of Millington (near Drummond and Atoka) for an 11 AM shotgun start. Entry fee is $50/person and includes a BBQ meal following the day’s tourney. Entry fees and names of players should be sent to Shawn Beyer by May 1st (see Shawn’s address below). Teams will be 4 players each – we’ll be matching players to teams where needed, so don’t worry if you don’t have 4 – we’d love to have you participate. Please contact Shawn Beyer at sbeyer@vermeermidsouth.com or Daryl Helle at daryl.helle@yellowbook.com with questions or for more information.
Annual Football Trip to see the Hawkeyes: We’ve chosen Homecoming weekend to travel to Iowa City to see the Hawkeyes take on the Michigan Wolverines, Saturday, October 10th. Tickets are $70/each. We also have a limited number of rooms available at the Heartland Inn in Coralville. Requests for tickets along with payment should be sent to Shawn Beyer no later than Sunday, May 31st.
Annual Potluck and Membership Meeting: Please mark your calendars for Saturday, August 22nd for our annual potluck and meeting. More details will be available at a later time.
Memphis Iowa Club Pride: I thought you would be interested in seeing a summary of all the activities of the Memphis Iowa Club during calendar year 2008. It is part of the club’s Board of Directors tasks every year to consider submitting nominations for the club in the categories of Club of the Year, Project of the Year, and/or Volunteer of the Year. ON IOWA … and … GO HAWKS!! Nancy
Annual Dues Reminder Each year, the annual potluck and membership meeting kicks off the club’s year. We had a great turnout this year and membership dues were received from those who were able to join us. If you were unable to attend, please take a moment to mail your dues. A check should be made payable to Memphis Iowa Club and mailed to: Shawn Beyer; 230 Aston Hall Drive; Eads, TN 38028. We have been fortunate as a club that we have not had to raise dues for many years – they remain at a reasonable $10/single or $15/family. Your Board of Directors thanks you in advance for your help!

School Supply Drive: We will again be collecting school supplies for donation to Corning Elementary School – a 100 percent poverty-level school located in Frazier. These kids and the school staff are so very appreciative of our support every year – please consider picking up a few things for them, or donate some cash, and we’ll do the shopping for you.
Troop Support: We have adopted another Iowa troop stationed in Iraq. Phone cards were purchased and sent via e-mail. We will be sending a care package shortly after January 1st, 2009. Please contact Linda Olsen at ljolsen@agriliance.com for more information.
The Big Ten Network has a web page that
is devoted to all sports from Big Ten schools. Check it out at
http://www.bigtennetwork.com/. The Club has shirts, towels, cookbooks and aprons available for sale. These would make excellent gifts, so keep this in mind.
Gift giving - Cookbooks / Towels / Aprons: We have a few cookbooks remaining and available for purchase. Please keep them in mind for wedding, birthday or any occasion gifts. Please contact Ty at memphishawkeye@aol.com to purchase.
UIAA: Did you know that you don't have to be a grad of the UI to become a member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association? They welcome all those who have an interest in and a desire to support the University of Iowa. Dues are minimal, and membership has many rewards. Hawkeye Style COOKBOOK AVAILABLE!! As part of the festivities to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Memphis Iowa Club, club members have worked hard to prepare a cookbook: HAWKEYE STYLE, A Collection of Hawkeye Recipes. The book includes 426 recipes from members, friends, and Hawkeye fans across the nation. A celebrity section includes 55 recipes from 31 notable alumni and associates of the University of Iowa, including Kirk Ferentz, Dan Gable, Steve Alford, Bob Bowlsby, UI President Skorton, and former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. The official unveiling of the cookbook took place at the annual membership meeting and potluck, August 27th. Please keep the cookbook in mind when planning gift giving for all those special occasions. Proceeds will benefit the Memphis Iowa Club Scholarship Endowment Fund, which provides Memphis area students financial help in attending the University of Iowa. The current recipient is Patrick Ashcraft of Germantown who received a $2,500 scholarship (2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06). We are very grateful for the wonderful support we have received from the UIAA who helped us collect recipes from celebrities. The Memphis Iowa Club and the Cookbook Project will be featured in a full-page article in the football program of the October 22nd Iowa-Michigan game. Also, please check out the UIAA website for an article about the Memphis Iowa Club. Cookbooks are available now through the Memphis Iowa Club. Price is a steal at
just $17 per book (add $3 shipping and handling if ordering by mail). All proceeds
benefit the Scholarship Endowment Fund of the Memphis Iowa Club. The cookbook is great ... even my Mississippi State co-workers were impressed (so I'll be giving them copies for Christmas). Alan Koufer, Nashville, TN
The cookbooks look terrific! I know I will enjoy mine and I'm sure that my family will love theirs. I especially like President Skorton's recipe! A.M., San Francisco, CA The Memphis Hawk Club Cookbook is one of the
very best that I've ever had. I spent most of last night reading the little inserts
on the pages and putting sticky notes on the recipes that I want to use first. All
look great! I also got one for each of my sons. Your group did a fantastic job
of putting this together for the enjoyment of many. It was also fun to see where
people were from and, of course, the celebrity section was very interesting - especially
President Skorton's and Andy Piro's input!! Kudos! To see a few photos of cookbook committee members, click here. |
