Memphis Iowa Club Events Calendar
· Saturday, November 21st football, 11:00 AM kick-off vs. Minnesota, Central BBQ. · Friday, December 11th Men’s B-Ball vs. Iowa State. This is the Club’s annual Holiday Party. Friends & family are invited (and welcome) to join us at the home of Kathy & Jay Baum in Germantown. More details later.
Who is Floyd of Rosedale? A bronze sculpture bears Floyd’s likeness and goes to the winner of the Iowa-Minnesota game every year. Since Floyd’s home state is Iowa, it is natural to believe that he definitely feels much more comfortable inside the friendly confines of Kinnick Stadium where he can be properly cared for. Please take a few minutes to read George Wine’s article at: http://www.officialsportsreport.com/teampage_email.asp?UpdateType=FinalApprove&teamID=31&breakingID=3638&Year=2009&Month=11&EmailerID=1515.
As the season progressed, we just couldn’t wait for Saturday to come around. Now, we’ve come to the last Saturday of the regular season, and I really want to put on the brakes. It has been such a thrilling season that I just don’t want it to end. I hope you will find a few hours to join us to cheer on the Hawks against Minnesota this Saturday. Saturday is also Senior Day. Several of our favorite Hawks will be playing their final game at Kinnick including Pat Angerer, Tony Moeaki, Trey Stross and others (click here to see full roster below). Kick-off is at 11 AM, and we’ll be at Central BBQ where Bartender Diana knows each of by name and has our beer iced down and our buckets ready for us when we walk in the door! To borrow a line from the movie Tin Cup, “It don’t git no better than this!”
I hope to see y’all real soon!!
ON IOWA … and … GO HAWKS!!!

Men’s Basketball:
Annual Dues Reminder Each year, the annual potluck and membership meeting kicks off the club’s year. If you are unable to attend, please take a moment to mail your dues. A check should be made payable to Memphis Iowa Club and mailed to: Shawn Beyer; 230 Aston Hall Drive; Eads, TN 38028. We have been fortunate as a club that we have not had to raise dues for many years – they remain at a reasonable $10/single or $15/family - the same as in 1984! Your Board of Directors thanks you in advance for your help!
School Supply Drive: We will again be collecting school supplies for donation to Corning Elementary School – a 100 percent poverty-level school located in Frazier. These kids and the school staff are so very appreciative of our support every year – please consider picking up a few things for them, or donate some cash, and we’ll do the shopping for you.
Troop Support: We have adopted another Iowa troop stationed in Iraq. Phone cards were purchased and sent via e-mail. We will be sending another care package soon. Please contact Linda Olsen at ljolsen@agriliance.com for more information.
The Big Ten Network has a web page that
is devoted to all sports from Big Ten schools. Check it out at
http://www.bigtennetwork.com/. The Club has shirts, towels, cookbooks and aprons available for sale. These would make excellent gifts, so keep this in mind.
Gift giving - Cookbooks / Towels / Aprons: We have a few cookbooks remaining and available for purchase. Please keep them in mind for wedding, birthday or any occasion gifts. Please contact Ty at memphishawkeye@aol.com to purchase.
UIAA: Did you know that you don't have to be a grad of the UI to become a member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association? They welcome all those who have an interest in and a desire to support the University of Iowa. Dues are minimal, and membership has many rewards. To get more information and to join, please go the UIAA website at http://www.iowalum.com/membership/index.html.

Hawkeye Style COOKBOOK AVAILABLE!! As part of the festivities to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Memphis Iowa Club, club members have worked hard to prepare a cookbook: HAWKEYE STYLE, A Collection of Hawkeye Recipes. The book includes 426 recipes from members, friends, and Hawkeye fans across the nation. A celebrity section includes 55 recipes from 31 notable alumni and associates of the University of Iowa, including Kirk Ferentz, Dan Gable, Steve Alford, Bob Bowlsby, UI President Skorton, and former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. The official unveiling of the cookbook took place at the annual membership meeting and potluck, August 27th. Please keep the cookbook in mind when planning gift giving for all those special occasions. Proceeds will benefit the Memphis Iowa Club Scholarship Endowment Fund, which provides Memphis area students financial help in attending the University of Iowa. The current recipient is Patrick Ashcraft of Germantown who received a $2,500 scholarship (2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06). We are very grateful for the wonderful support we have received from the UIAA who helped us collect recipes from celebrities. The Memphis Iowa Club and the Cookbook Project will be featured in a full-page article in the football program of the October 22nd Iowa-Michigan game. Also, please check out the UIAA website for an article about the Memphis Iowa Club. Cookbooks are available now through the Memphis Iowa Club. Price is a steal at
just $17 per book (add $3 shipping and handling if ordering by mail). All proceeds
benefit the Scholarship Endowment Fund of the Memphis Iowa Club. The cookbook is great ... even my Mississippi State co-workers were impressed (so I'll be giving them copies for Christmas). Alan Koufer, Nashville, TN
The cookbooks look terrific! I know I will enjoy mine and I'm sure that my family will love theirs. I especially like President Skorton's recipe! A.M., San Francisco, CA The Memphis Hawk Club Cookbook is one of the
very best that I've ever had. I spent most of last night reading the little inserts
on the pages and putting sticky notes on the recipes that I want to use first. All
look great! I also got one for each of my sons. Your group did a fantastic job
of putting this together for the enjoyment of many. It was also fun to see where
people were from and, of course, the celebrity section was very interesting - especially
President Skorton's and Andy Piro's input!! Kudos! To see a few photos of cookbook committee members, click here. |
