Adopt An Iowa Marine Program

With the holidays around the corner, now is a good time to support our Iowa National Guard Units deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan through the Iowa Club's Adopt An Iowa Marine Program. You will bring a big "Hawk Holiday Hello" to our fellow Iowans by mailing letters and packages of requested supplies. Special thanks to Justin McBride, Paradise Iowa Club, as ten Iowa Marines have been adopted through this program and supplies are reaching our soldiers overseas! Since this is a combat unit, e-mail is not available.
Below are mailing addresses, shipping instructions, list of requested supplies (for nutrition, clothing, personal care, current events and entertainment, and the holidays), and a note from a soldier's mom. When mailing packages, please let Justin know the weight per package as he tracks the total weight of all shipments from Iowa Clubs.

For additional details, please contact Justin directly @ 239-677-1354 or mcbride_justin@hotmail.com.

The three active units currently deployed are: The 833rd, the 164th, and D Co. Each unit consists of approximately 120 Iowa soldiers, and their mailing addresses are below:

* * * DON'T FORGET TO INCLUDE HAWKEYE ITEMS * * *

Unit Info: (home station locations)

1SG Steve Dreher
833RD SAPPERS
APO AE 09391
(Johnston)
SGM Harrison McNaughton
164th EN BN
A/1-113th CAV (JVB)
APO AE 09342-1400
(Denison)
1SG Rick Singer
D Co, 1-168th IN
164 EN BN
APO AE 09342-1400

Mailing Instructions

The best way to mail packages to the troops is through the US Mail. Use the Flat Rate Priority Mailer. There are two sizes of boxes, so you can usually fit anything. The two flat rate boxes are 12" X 3.5" X 14" and 11" X 8.5" X 5.5", so pack accordingly. The cost to ship either on of these is $7.70. The more you pack in each box, the better value it is. For each box you send, you will need to fill out a Customs Declaration and Dispatch Note- CP 72. These act as the address label too. So don't worry about putting the address on the box. Just fill out the forms and bring a completed form for each box you plan to send. You do not need to fill out every box on the form. Here is how to fill out the necessary areas of the form:

From: Your address and Iowa Club name

To: The Unit's address ... no need to fill out postcode, city, or country as the APO address takes care of those sections

Detailed Description of Contents (1): Justin writes "sundries" or "brief descriptions", however, some post offices require more details, but be brief and to the point

Value (5): This is up to you ... Justin writes "$100" on all packages he mails

Comments (11): Justin writes "NONE"

Date and Signature (15): Sign and fill out before mailing to save time

Sender's Instruction in Case Non Delivery (16): In this box, write your unit's address, but for the name, write "ANYONE" ... this way, if your contact is not available, the package will still make it to someone in your unit

List of Requested Items:

  • Stress Relief Squeeze Balls
Clothes
  • Shoe Laces for Gym Shoes and Boots
  • Boot Socks
  • Brown T-shirts

Tips:

  • For items like nuts, candy, etc., pack in large zip lock freezer bags and consolidate these packages where possible as conventional packaging leaves lots of room for air and you want to maximize space, not pay for shipping air
  • Go to the Post office and pick up a supply of boxes and the Customs Forms ... that way you can pack boxes and fill out forms at home, and then bring them in ... ready to go all at once :)
  • Tape the boxes well ... military transport to Iraq/Afghanistan is a long, tough journey!
  • Have everything boxed and filled out when you arrive ... this will go smoother for you and the Post Office!

Letter from a soldier's mom:

"The individual snack packs at Sam's or Costco which are like ones you would get out of a vending machine work so well when the soldiers are out on patrol. They can stuff them in a pocket of their body armor. All kinds of nuts are available from cashews, mixed nuts, to plain peanuts----that provides a bit of nutrition also until they get to the next meal. Lots of candies come in these individual packs as well. A large bag of Trail Mix with a package of small zip lock bags to take small amounts on patrol is also good. I have had good luck with M&M's traveling well even in the heat.

Homemade cookies will travel well if you wrap two cookies back to back in saran wrap----then put a layer of bubble wrap on the bottom of a Glad container and pack a dozen or so wrapped cookies into each container---put a layer of bubble wrap on top and then put the lid on. Put the Glad container full of cookies inside a larger mailing box and the cookies will stay intact. I have done a lot of chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal raisin this way. You can make these ahead, package per above, and freeze until you are ready to ship.----They love homemade cookies!!

Plastic jars of Peanut Butter and plastic jars of jelly travel well.—They can put it on crackers. Also Easy Cheese---"Squirt Cheese"-----is good with the sausage and crackers---some of the guys like horseradish mustard on the sausage also and of course look for a plastic jar."

Please let Justin know when your package/s is mailed so he can let the Unit know when to expect the package/s. Also, please let Justin know the total weight of your package/s. The USPS will weigh each package/s before they are mailed.

If you have any additional questions, please call Justin McBride @ 239-677-1354, and he will gladly answer any questions.

College Fairs
Representatives Needed in Boston 4-10 & 4-11 and Providence 4-12 & 4-28

The New England Iowa Club has committed to attending the following College Fairs.  We are in need of several volunteers to assist in promoting the interests of University of Iowa at the Fairs.

Over the many years that we have had the privilege of representing our great University, we have met many alumni and former Iowans who stop by our table, now as parents or grandparents, seeking information.  The volunteers, who have assisted us in providing information to prospective students, have found the experience to be unique, rewarding and informative (tuition increases, expanded courses of instruction).  We usually have sufficient volunteers (we aim at three to four at each fair) to allow sufficient time for one to visit the other schools.  The University of Iowa is one out of the five to six Big TEN Schools, who regularly attend the listed College Fairs.

Please assist the New England Iowa Club's tradition of representing the University of Iowa at these Fairs!

If you can volunteer, please contact our Iowa Club's Career Fair Leader Don Elbert @ donIHawk@aol.com or call 401-556-1201.

A Theatre Event for you ... from Iowa Alumni in Boston ...

"Have you ever met someone that held a years worth of friendship in their glance? Or a stranger that explained honesty in their touch?" These moments when time stops...we call them The Autumn Hours. A celebration of life, love and the reaching of our hearts. The Autumn Hours is a sensualist's dream. Full of visual and auditory delights this Love Actually, vignette style play will assault your senses and pluck your heart strings. Following seven intertwining stories of moments in life when taking a breath is too much, and achieving moments on the edge of existence when humanity is the only option, 11:11 will weave you into our community and blanket you in peace. With a veteran cast and original music by Matt Pryor and John Brewton, this play promises laughs, tears and a soul full of wanting. Directed by Benjy Schirm and produced by 11:11 Theatre Company, the show will run approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
