"How awesome to have an opportunity to learn and grow and have fun doing it—and for that spirit to continue throughout our lives."
Why did you decide to attend the University of Iowa?
I wanted to be a pediatrician and the University of Iowa's medical school was highly regarded. In actuality, it was the campus visit that clinched it for me; the campus size, location, and friendliness of the community provided the right fit for me and my goals.
What does the UIAA tagline, "Once A Hawkeye..." mean to you?
Being a Hawkeye isn't a four year stint, but a lifetime commitment of learning and service. UI alumni share a common desire to be the best and use our education and experiences to make an impact on the world. That Hawkeye experience continues well after graduation—whether or not we get back to campus—through our career achievements, renewed friendships via the UIAA's Facebook page or reunions, and when gathering with friends to cheer on the Hawks. How awesome to have an opportunity to learn and grow and have fun doing it—and for that spirit to continue throughout our lives. On, Iowa! On forever more!
What was your favorite UI class?
Introduction to Social Problems with Marv Krohn and Linda Robinson, who were very down-to-earth and approachable. Class discussions were respectful, thought-provoking, and lively—what I consider to be the heart of a great liberal arts education.
How have your UI degree, experiences, or friendships changed your life?
I met my wife, Jan, while we were students at the UI, and we now have three children. My UI experiences prepared me well for life after college, both in my career and in my personal pursuits; plus, the UI has had an impact on other family members from Illinois. Two of my nephews graduated from the University of Iowa, and my niece begins her UI experience this fall. I'd call that a trend in the right direction!
How does the UI Alumni Association help you keep in touch with your fellow alumni and your alma mater?
Though I live locally and work on the UI campus, I've utilized Find-A-Friend, the OnIowa online community, and the UI Alumni Association's Facebook page to keep in touch with former classmates and to reengage with friends from my college days from around the country. Â I'm very interested in reading about the successes and experiences of my fellow alumni within the pages of the Iowa Alumni Magazine, especially the digital version, which I truly enjoy. It helps bring back some great memories and provides insight into the world outside of my own experiences.
How does your involvement with the UIAA enrich your life?
I joined the UI Alumni Association to stay connected with the place and the people that are the University of Iowa. Though I'm back on campus, I can still maintain active ties with my fellow alumni regardless of distance. Thank you, UIAA!
