The African American Cultural Center (Afro House) Alumni Memories

The African American Cultural Center (Afro House) Alumni Memories
Melita Pope Mitchell

Personal Update:
I completed a MA in Higher Education Administration from the University of Michigan in 1999 and continued to work there for 8 years in the Student Affairs division.  My husband, Rari, and I have 3 wonderful children, Whitney (14), Tristan (8) and London (6).  We are also licensed foster parents who plan to adopt.  I will begin my Ed.D. coursework with North Carolina State University in August 2009. I currently work for Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC.

Memory:
It is difficult to name only one memory at the Afro House.  I can remember baking sweet potato pies in the kitchen for the BSU fundraiser.  I remember gathering there to hold our own Million Man March vigil.  I fondly remember gatherings with my sorority sisters, the Deltas, to fellowship and building lasting memories.  Above all, I remember the importance this house had to Black students on campus.  It was a safe place to share ideas, voice concerns and celebrate life and culture.
