Architectural styles evolve over time like women's fashions, automobiles, and furniture. Styles of any kind are not ends in themselves—they are tools that help us glimpse into our cultural history at specific times and places. This course will examine the progression of styles in American architecture from 1840 through 1950. An emphasis will be placed on how to analyze architectural form and detail using visual comparisons and historical and aesthetic reference. Style characteristics will be illustrated and discussed in a slide-lecture format.

INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Patricia Eckhardt is an architectural historian who has worked as an historic preservation consultant for more than 30 years. She received her B.A. degree from Lindenwood College and an M.A., M.F.A., and Ph.D. from the UI. Now retired from her business, she continues to enjoy researching and writing about historical topics that interest her.
