Session 8

Museums and Art at the University of Iowa

Thursdays, May 6, 13, 20, 27
1:30–3:20 p.m. (Figge Museum trip on May 27 will be 1:30–5:30 p.m.)
Registration Deadline: April 22
Class Limit: 45

This course offers a moveable feast of art. One week, we’ll meet at Richie Ballroom in the Iowa Memorial Union to study the artworks that have returned to our campus since the flood; another week, we’ll gather in the Old Capitol Museum Senate Chamber and learn about Iowa history. The UI Museum of Natural History in Macbride Hall will be our venue to learn about the natural world, while in the fourth week, we will take a bus trip to the Figge Museum in Davenport, current home to the majority of UIMA works that were removed from campus because of the flood of 2008. There, we’ll see Jackson Pollock’s “Mural,” as well as other masterworks on display. A complete schedule will be sent upon registration for the course.

INSTRUCTOR: Pamela White is interim director of the University of Iowa Museum of Art and director of the UI Pentacrest Museums: the Natural History Museum and Old Capitol. Also director of the UI’s Museum Studies Program, she teaches “Introduction to Museums” during the fall semester. Prior to assuming the directorship of the museums, she was curator of painting and sculpture at the University of Iowa Museum of Art.
