Activities included events such as the Black and Gold Carnival, the President's Block Party, a lecture by Frank Warren, author of PostSecret, the Late night event, which included slip n' slide, and Taste of Iowa City. For a full schedule of this year's events, visit http://welcome.uiowa.edu. S.T.A.T. Informational Meeting is a one-time only group meeting held by S.T.A.T. advisors for new members and interested students to learn about the benefits of membership. This gathering provided an opportunity to meet people, ask questions and sign up. Make-A-Wish Game Day is an event hosted by the ambassadors for Make-A-Wish kids and their families from the area. We had a tailgate with food donated from the First Avenue Hy-Vee, a craft station, a visit from Herky and the Spirit Squad and some of the Hawkeye football players. Beat State Week invited students to help pump up the Hawkeyes before their match up with the Iowa State Cyclones—a victory for the Hawkeyes (35–3)! Each day was packed with exclusive events and prizes including a corn cob challenge, a free Beat State T-shirt, a clothing and blood drive, and more. Also, S.T.A.T. members and students interested in S.T.A.T. came to Hubbard Park to enjoy a free sandwich, courtesy of the UI Alumni Association. UI Afro American Celebration was on September 18-20, 2009 honoring the Afro-American Cultural Center's (Afro House) 41 years of supporting students on campus. People joined together to recognize history, renew relationships, empower the next generation of Afro-American students on campus, and help address issues concerning the UI black community. T-Shirt Day 2009 was a big hit. We handed out over 200 prizes to our S.T.A.T. members. Students were able to make connections with alumni of different ethnic background and professional areas. Hot Chocolate Give-A-Way - The UIAA and S.T.A.T. Ambassadors served over 100 S.T.A.T. members hot chocolate and coffee on February 15. The weather was cold making the hot drinks very appreciated! It's our way to say thank you for your membership. “Mocktail” Party - On February 24, S.T.A.T. members seized the opportunity to learn cocktail party etiquette from expert Margie Peskin of Search Forward, a career development firm. After attending her class, students practiced their newly learned skills with more than a dozen volunteer alumni at a posh cocktail party at the Levitt Center—sans alcohol. Alumni chatted about the working world and shared advice on interviewing, networking, and life beyond college. It wasn't all work and no play, though, as everyone enjoyed talking about the university and student life. Don't miss your chance to polish your skills at a S.T.A.T. etiquette dinner in the fall.
