Volunteer Opportunities


Rape Victim Advocacy Program

Opportunities

Crisis-line advocate: staff the 24-hour Sexual Abuse Crisis Line (also the Iowa Sexual Abuse Hotline). Advocates offer support, healing information and appropriate referrals to people from across the state.

Medical and legal advocate: Trained crisis line advocates provide in-person advocacy to a survivor while she or he is reporting an assault to the police station and/or hospital.

Board of Directors: Assist the agency with fundraising and planning.

Requirements
RVAP volunteer applicants must:

1. be at least 19 years old or demonstrate exceptional maturity.

2. provide references.

3. commit to the time requirements for training and volunteering. We prefer a commitment of at least one year.

4. be mentally and emotionally prepared to commit to the volunteer training process.

5. have the communications skills necessary to absorb the training material; and be able to efficiently communicate with, and keep records of, interactions with service-users.

6. demonstrate effective listening skills and respectful communication in all RVAP interactions and volunteer work, including the volunteer interview and training.

7. demonstrate acceptance of diverse lifestyles, values, and opinions, and refrain from judging survivors' choices.

8. be committed to and motivated by the desire to provide advocacy, support, and information to survivors of sexual abuse and the significant others of victims and survivors.

9. show an ability to understand and willingness to adapt to a feminist, nondirective, survivor-centered model of peer counseling.

Volunteer Bonus
Many departments within the University of Iowa offer college credit to volunteers for their efforts.
