PAST EVENTS

Welcome Week 2009 took place at the beginning of the school year for new and returning students, faculty, and staff with a number of festivities on campus. Activities included events such as the Black and Gold Carnival, the President’s Block Party, a lecture by Frank Warren, author of PostSecret, the Late night event, which included slip n’ slide, and Taste of Iowa City. For a full schedule of this year's events, visit http://welcome.uiowa.edu.

S.T.A.T. Informational Meeting is a one-time only group meeting held by S.T.A.T. advisors for new members and interested students to learn about the benefits of membership. This gathering provided an opportunity to meet people, ask questions and sign up.

Make-A-Wish Game Day is an event hosted by the ambassadors for Make-A-Wish  kids and their families from the area.  We had a tailgate with food donated from the First Avenue Hy-Vee, a craft station, a visit from Herky and the Spirit Squad and some of the Hawkeye football players.

Beat State Week invited students to help pump up the Hawkeyes before their match up with the Iowa State Cyclones—a victory for the Hawkeyes (35–3)! Each day was packed with exclusive events and prizes including a corn cob challenge, a free Beat State T-shirt, a clothing and blood drive, and more. Also, S.T.A.T. members and students interested in S.T.A.T. came to Hubbard Park to enjoy a free sandwich, courtesy of the UI Alumni Association.

UI Afro American Celebration was on September 18-20, 2009 honoring the Afro-American Cultural Center’s (Afro House) 41 years of supporting students on campus. People joined together to recognize history, renew relationships, empower the next generation of Afro-American students on campus, and help address issues concerning the UI black community.

T-Shirt Day 2009 was a huge success.  We handed out over 200 prizes to our S.T.A.T. members. Prizes included two club seats to the Iowa vs. Northwestern football game, four tickets to opening night to Avenue Q, free burritos from Panchero’s, water bottles from Hill’s Bank, and many others.

Hungry Hawkeyes dinner was a huge success with over 50 students and six alumni hosts. Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow (S.T.A.T.) members were able to enjoy a free dinner and great networking with area alumni.  Alumni who attended the event include ophthalmologist, Dr. Steve Wolken, Workforce Business Services Director of the Iowa City Area Development Group, DaLayne Williamson, Communication Director for the Iowa City Area Development Group, Eric Hanson, physician’s assistant, Gina Glass, assistant professor of psychiatry, Dr. Eric Epping  and UIHC Pharmaceutical care supervisor Brenda Carmody.

Homecoming was made even sweeter by the Iowa Hawkeyes victory over the Michigan Wolverines.  The Homecoming Executive Council planned a great week of events for the students, alumni, and the community.  The UI Alumni Association was a sponsor and presented the Alumni Welcome Tent and Hungry Hawkeyes.
