S.T.A.T.venger Hunt

Won on April 4, 2001 by Kelly Robbins

S.T.A.T.venger Hunt winner, Kelly Robbins, holding the S.T.A.T. medallion. "I knew it was located near the hawk when I read the clue about 'going bump in the night;' I knew it was related to Bump Elliot."

Here are the clues that Kelly and others were given on the location of the S.T.A.T. medallion, with their explanations:

  • Svendi Hall would have been to the east of me. March 26, 2001
The building is now an apartment complex on the corner of Dubuque and Jefferson Streets.

  • St. James may have had nice lodging in the late 1800s, but you won't find me there now. March 27, 2001
St. James was a hotel located on the corner of Clinton Street and Iowa Avenue. In 1914, it became the student union, and burned down on Good Friday in 1916. Iowa Book now stands there.

  • In 1904, "the crypt" was home to a ladies' gymnasium; however, no medals were won there. March 28, 2001
"The Crypt" was a single room in the basement of what is now Schaeffer Hall. Women didn't compete there, they only had gym classes, therefore, no contests were played and no medals were won.

  • If you're looking for me in the dark, you could go bump in the night. March 29, 2001
The hawk statue, Strike Force, was given in honor of Chalmers "Bump" Elliott, UI Men's Athletic Director from June 11, 1970 to July 31, 1999.

  • When I arrived on campus, a chief was busy commanding his tribe. March 30, 2001
The statue was given November 10, 1990. During that football season, Danan Hughes, who later went on to play for the Kansas City Chiefs, was in his second season and a main player for the Hawkeyes. The team went to the Rose Bowl that year and lost to Washington 46-34.

  • My neighbor may talk about me and hear about me, but he can't see me. March 31, 2001
The Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center is located on the west side of the river. However, it is not within seeing distance of the hawk.

  • When I arrived on campus, a Hawkeye alum was only the eighth woman to wear the red, white, and blue. April 1, 2001
Jolette Law, former UI women's basketball standout, became the 8th woman to play for the world-renowned Harlem Globetrotters. Their colors are red, white, and blue.

  • Hard rock fans may have an easier time finding me. April 2, 2001
Hard rock fans are often described with the slang term "metal head." Since the hawk, Strike Force, is built of metal, we thought of metal heads and, in turn, of hard rock fans.

  • The first fraternity house built on my side of the river is to the east of me. April 3, 2001
The first fraternity house built at the UI was the SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) house. It is on the west side of the river.

  • I am honored to be where I am. April 4, 2001
The hawk, Strike Force, was given in honor of Bump Elliot.

  • You can shake your way across the street, but don't get too excited; they don't serve fries there.
The Ronald McDonald House (sponsored by the McDonald's restaurant chain) is across the street from the hawk.

  • The grand prize will slam you in the face if you stand by me.
The hawk is located outside of the baseball stadium past the outfield. If someone were to hit a grand slam, or a homerun, the ball would more than probably go over the fence.
