S.T.A.T.venger Hunt 2005

Congratulations to Justin Miller, a first-year student from Le Mars, Iowa, the winner of the 2005 S.T.A.T.-venger Hunt! Justin is the winner of the student season athletic ticket package for 2005-06, courtesy of the UI Athletic Department. Justin said, “I got lucky and found it right before someone else did—literally about ten seconds before!” Thank you to all of this year’s participants, your intense searching was very much appreciated.

2005 STATvenger Hunt Clues and Explanations

Clue #10 - Friday, April 8
Midterm’s crunch time is near. It doesn’t take an architect, chemist, physicist, or engineer to find the medallion, but look west. The medallion is marked by a blue X.

Explanation
(The medallion is buried on the west side of the Iowa Advanced Technologies Laboratory. Frank Gehry, a famous architect, designed the IATL in 1992. Research in this university facility is conducted by departmental faculty from chemistry, physics and engineering. To view the listing of research projects visit http://research.uiowa.edu/vpr/?get=iatl. )

Clue #9 - Thursday, April 7
The atomic mass of the medallion is not 407 a.m.u.’s, but that represents the number of paces to its hiding spot.

Explanation
(An element’s atomic mass is weighed in atomic mass units. From entrance three of the chemistry building, it is approximately 407 average strides to the location of the medallion. The STAT medallion is buried 407 paces from the ground floor chemistry building entrance--across the street, down the ramp, directly down the sidewalk around the west side of the Iowa Advanced Technologies Laboratory.)

Clue #8 - Wednesday, April 6
This President isn’t a badger fan, but will lead you north to the S.T.A.T. medallion. Remember, X marks the spot.

Explanation
(A badger fan would cheer for the University of Wisconsin Badgers; the main campus is located in Madison, Wisconsin. Madison Street runs north/south on the UI campus. The medallion is buried on the west side of the IATL.)

Clue #7 - Tuesday, April 5
Frustrated?? Here is some classified information: “It is black and white and read all over.” The answer to the clue originates from a building on campus. Go north to find the S.T.A.T. medallion.

Explanation
(This clue is from the childhood joke, “What is black and white and red all over?” The answer is a newspaper. Classified advertisements are also found in a newspaper. The Daily Iowan, the university paper, is located at the Communications center. The STAT Medallion is buried north of the Communications Center.)

Clue #6 - Monday, April 4
To keep you safe, this Grand structure made of green steel costs you nothing to use, but will get you where you need to go. Head east.

Explanation
(This pedestrian walkway, which allows students, visitors, and locals to cross busy Riverside Drive, runs east/west from Grand Avenue and ends up on Burlington Street. There is no fee to use it and the walkway is supported by green steel. The medallion is buried east of the Grand Avenue walkway.)

Clue #5 - Friday, April 1
If the original plans had been completed, Mary-Kate and Ashley would have felt right at home here. This campus building was designed with a penthouse, patio, and scenic views. The S.T.A.T. medallion is buried on the west side of this building.

Explanation
(The Olsen twins live in a penthouse apartment in Manhattan. One might not know that the original architect’s design for the Iowa Advanced Technologies Laboratory (IATL) included a penthouse. The description states that the building is three stories tall with a penthouse, while the large windows inside overlook a patio toward the river (scenic view). To view the IATL description visit www.arcspace.com/gehry_new/iowa/iowa.htm. The Medallion is buried on the west side of the Iowa Advanced Technologies Lab.)

Clue #4 - Thursday, March 31
You may not study finance but could need special support. It’s hard to admit that most of these clues aren’t registering right away but it helps to orientate yourself to campus. Identify this campus building, and go northwest to find the medallion.

Explanation
(Calvin Hall houses the Registration center, Office of Admissions, Student Financial Aid, Special Support Services, and Orientation Services. This information was gathered from the Alumni Reunion Weekend Campus bus tour- 2002 and the STAR training manual. The medallion is buried northwest of Calvin Hall. )

Clue #3 - Wednesday, March 30
Venus may be known as the “jewel of the sky,” but it doesn’t advise a single or double date at this campus locale. Find this place on campus and go northeast to find the S.T.A.T. medallion.

Explanation
(The Recreation Center has tennis courts inside, where one can play a game of singles or doubles. Venus Williams plays tennis, while Venus, the planet, is also known as “the jewel of the sky” on www.solarviews.com/eng/venus.htm. Astrologers believe that the planets advise or provide horoscopes about the future, love, jobs, and relationships. The medallion is buried northeast of the Recreation Center. )

Clue #2 - Tuesday, March 29
This house is jazzed about its “plaster-surgery” and it can be considered the heart of the university. Look south of this residence.

Explanation
(The medallion is buried south of the President’s House, one of the most visible and significant landmarks on campus. See this website for detailed information about the renovation of the UI President’s house, www.uifoundation.org/campaign/102/. Before being named UI President, Dr. Skorton focused his medical research on congenital heart disease and is known for his interest in jazz. Information obtained about Skorton was found at www.uiowa.edu/president/bio.html )

Clue #1 - Monday, March 28
This building is not a residence hall but it has housed more than 38,000 people and is open 365 days a year. Go east from this building to find the S.T.A.T. medallion.

Explanation
(This clue is the Ronald McDonald House located by Carver Hawkeye Arena. The medallion is east of the Ronald McDonald House. The information was collected from the Ronald McDonald House of Iowa City’s website, www.uihealthcare.com/depts/ronaldmcdonald/amazingfacts.html).
