S.T.A.T.-venger Hunt 2006

S.T.A.T.-venger 2006 - Start hunting!

The medallion has been found, after only four clues!  It's a record, but the research and thought by UI student Kieran Leopold paid off!

Kieran located the medallion at the UI band practice field (off Park Road) and collected his handsome reward---athletic tickets, Hawkeye prize pack, a complimentary 2006-2007 S.T.A.T. membership, and the MEDALLION!!!!

Here are the clues from this year's hunt:

Clue 1: English-Philosophy Building- Every campus has folklore, myths, and legends.  While no university official can confirm it, this building is rumored to be riot-proof.  Head north to find the medallion.

Explanation: The English-Philosophy Building is rumored to be riot-proof. Professors and university officials from Facilities Services or Space Planning have heard but can’t confirm this urban legend.

Clue 2: Grant Field We’ve both recently had makeovers, but if you don’t confuse me with Kinnick, you’re one pass closer to your goal. Run northeast to find the medallion.

Explanation: Grant Field is the Hawkeye hockey field.  Like Kinnick Stadium, it has recently been made over.

Clue 3: Dental Building Most campus places offer knowledge, but at this building, some students lose wisdom.

Explanation: Students can have their wisdom teeth removed at the Dental Building.

Clue 4: Veterans Affairs Medical Center This building has the same abbreviation as a southern state that refers to itself as a Commonwealth.  Look at a campus map and track down the medallion north of this location.

Explanation: The State of Virginia refers to itself as a Commonwealth.  The postal abbreviation for the state is “VA,” which is also the abbreviation for the Veterans Affairs Center on the campus map. http://www.virginia.gov/cmsportal/

Clue 5: The Airliner-You don’t need frequent flier miles to travel here, and in-flight meals are only $1.50 on Sundays.  Fly northwest to find the medallion.

Explanation: The Airliner restaurant has a Sunday special of $1.50 pizza slices.

Clue 6: Student Legal Services (IMU)-If you ran into Paula this weekend and object, this student government-sponsored office might be able to help you.  The burden of proof is on you to find the medallion!  To crack the case, head north.

Explanation: PAULA is the acronym for Possession of Alcohol Under the Legal Age. The University of Iowa Student Government sponsors Student Legal Services, which offers free legal advice to students from its office in the IMU.

Clue 7: Theatre Building-Take a bow; it’s almost curtain call!  The plot thickens as you home in on the medallion. Go stage left (west) to get one step closer to the medallion.

Explanation: Curtain call, plot, and stage left are theater vocabulary.

Clue 8: Kuhl House-The University of Iowa Press Since 1987, this has been the place where great writing begins. Walt Whitman would definitely approve!  Look west to find the medallion.

Explanation: “Where Great Writing Begins” is the slogan for the University of Iowa Press, which is located in Kuhl House.  Walt Whitman is in reference to the Iowa Whitman series, which is published by the University of Iowa Press.

Clue 9: As a veteran “STAT-venger” participant, you know the drill.  The medallion isn’t far from the park, so don’t blow it.

Explanation: Veteran is slang for a person who has “marched both fall and winter and know what they’re doing.”  Drill is the routine that a band or color guard performs.  “Don’t blow it” is in reference to blowing into band instruments in order to play them.

Clue 10: To find the medallion, it’s time to march to the beat. X marks the spot!

RULES OF THE GAME:

  • The medallion is buried only a few inches underground, the only tool you need is a kitchen spoon.

  • Do not trample through, or dig up any landscaping or flowerbeds! The medallion will not be hidden under them.

  • The daily clues are not specific to the medallion location. Many of the clues are designed to narrow your campus wide search.

  • University and private property is not to be ruined, so please don’t be destructive.

  • If you find the S.T.A.T. medallion, take it to the University of Iowa Alumni Association at the Levitt Center in order to claim your prize! Make sure to do this as soon as possible so we can alert other participants that the medallion has been found.
