S.T.A.T.venger Hunt 2010

S.T.A.T.venger Winners 2010

S.T.A.T.venger Winners 2010

CONGRATULATIONS to Kate Jochum and Justin Sukup for finding the S.T.A.T.venger medallion buried in the yard of the P. Sue Beckwith, M.D. Boathouse, the home of the UI women’s rowing team. They found the clue in only three days by carefully researching UI trivia and said they benefited from the bonus clue they picked up at the Iowa Memorial Union on the first day. THANK YOU to all who participated!

The Hunt began on April 12. S.T.A.T. members looked for the clues via the S.T.A.T. Listserv, on Facebook, and on this page.

How The Hunt Worked
Over a period of ten business days, students received daily e-mails with clues that led them across campus in search of the S.T.A.T. medallion. The first student to find the medallion WON season football and basketball tickets, a Hawkeye prize pack, and a complimentary 2010-2011 S.T.A.T. membership.

The daily CLUES, focused on historical trivia about UI buildings and places, helped students eliminate areas and pointed them toward the medallion’s hiding place (Students did not need to go to each location UNLESS the clue prompted them to do so). The clues were also posted on the S.T.A.T. Facebook page.

Once the vicinity of the S.T.A.T. MEDALLION was identified, students looked for an X painted on the ground that marked the spot where they were to dig ( only a couple of inches into the ground). The uncovered token was taken to the UI Alumni Association, located at the Levitt Center, where the well-deserved treasure was awarded.

S.T.A.T.venger Clues 2010

Clue #1

To begin your hunt, head to the epicenter of campus, which was assembled in 1924 after things got heated. In the main space of this structure, you will find a service that can help you in an economic bind—go to this location to find an extra treasure that could assist you in your S.T.A.T.venger Hunt.

Answer:
The University of Iowa Community Credit Union (UICCU)
is located in the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU), which is the center of campus. The previous Iowa Union burnt down, and the IMU’s construction began in 1924. The S.T.A.T.venger bonus clue was located at the UICCU.

Clue #2

Now go eastward to Liz’s rhythmic place. During the ’30s, students could come to this building to help determine their course.

Answer: Halsey Hall is named after Elizabeth Halsey, who was the head of the Department of Physical Education. Halsey Hall is now the home of the Department of Dance.  In the 1930s, there were several locations where students registered for classes, including Halsey Hall, the Field House, the IMU, and the Library Annex in Old Armory.

Clue #3

Head north in your search for the medallion to the institute that originated on Market, but relocated to Madison in 1976. Moved to the location that previously housed records of past learners, this organization became a place for Dr. Jew to reach her goal.

Answer: In 1976, the Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC) moved from Market Street to Madison Street into the previous headquarters of Alumni Records. In 1990, Dr. Jean Y. Jew triumphed in a sexual harassment and slander case against the University of Iowa.  The 1990s brought backlash and attacks against the center and women’s groups throughout the world. However, there were also triumphs, like the Jean Y. Jew sexual harassment and slander decision against the University of Iowa. Dr. Jew’s case helped establish policies and legal precedents that contribute toward the goal of creating an environment in which every individual can work and learn regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or disability (www.uiowa.edu/~wrac/mission.shtml). This is part of the WRAC’s mission.

Bonus Clue

In 1992, Brad Pitt starred in this movie.

Answer: In 1992, Brad Pitt starred in A River Runs Through It. The boathouse is designed to accommodate a flood if the river overflowed and ran through it. Also, there is a current-generating pool inside of the boathouse for rowing simulations.
