Dr. Ken Magid Child Advocacy Scholarship

The Dr. Ken Magid Child Advocacy Service Scholarship was set up in 2005 to assist UI students in covering expenses related to overseas volunteer service travel. The scholarship is administered by the University of Iowa Alumni Association Iowa Voyagers. There are two service locations: Romania and Ecuador

Linda R. Baker, 68BA, a UIAA Directors’ Club Honor Circle Member, funds the scholarship, which is named in honor of her former teacher and role model,
Dr. Kenneth Magid, who was a tremendous influence on her career and service efforts. In 2005, Linda traveled with Iowa Voyagers to Romania to participate in volunteer service work. Her efforts during the trip had such an impact on her that she created this scholarship to help UI students participate in a life-changing experience—volunteer service travel. In 2012, Linda endowed the scholarship, ensuring the future funding of these meaninful programs.

The scholarship will cover accommodations, airfare, meals, program materials, and on-site training for students to participate in a service trip for two weeks. This is a working trip in which students are expected to assist and contribute positively to the life of the local people. Students will be traveling abroad, living in comfortable but basic accommodations, eating plentiful, local foods, and interacting daily with other volunteers and staff.
