Unforgettable Hayden Fry

by NA NA

We asked alumni to share their memories of Hayden Fry....

I had a brief conversation with Coach Fry one evening in El Paso, Texas, at the hotel where the team was staying for the 1997 Sun Bowl. As he was autographing my football, I told him I really didn't want him to "ride off into the sunset on an ole' mule," which was a statement made in one if not many of the newspapers who were anticipating his retirement after that game. He looked me in the eye and said, "Honey, let me tell you a story." He went on to tell me how his father, who died when he was around 14 (I believe), had an old mule and the only time he rode it he fell off and nearly broke his arm. He laughed at the story, put his arm around me, and said, "I don't plan on going anywhere just yet." He then winked at me and went on his way. Hayden Fry ... you will be missed more than you'll ever know! Iowa football will not be the same without you!

The 1981 season, when Iowa beat Nebraska and roses appeared on the sports page of the Des Moines Register for the first time in I don't know how many years. I remember the picture of Hayden Fry holding roses in his hands. I still have that paper somewhere.

As a four-year member of the Hawkeye Marching Band, it was great to hear Coach Hayden Fry's appreciation of the band. I loved Iowa football long before I stepped foot on campus as a student. The band was a fun way to be involved in the great Iowa football tradition Hayden had created. I was also fortunate enough to attend I-Club breakfasts on Fridays before home games. Some of the stories I heard those days put a smile on my face for the entire day. I still recall a statement (I can't remember the exact words) about "what did we do before he got here to make everyone so mad and out to get us." As Carol Harker's article stated, Hayden, you are a hero. Iowa loves you. You will be definitely missed. Thank you for creating a wonderful tradition and thank you for your years at Iowa!

My junior and senior year I worked at Finkbine golf course, and one of the jobs I performed was working at the range. Hayden's wife loved to golf. Every so often you would see Hayden dropping by the course, watching his wife from afar, then joining her. I was touched that a person with so many other commitments still had the values to make time for his family.
