A Show of Faith: Aman Aminzay

Aman Aminzay reading book An undergraduate religion major and now a UI medical student, Cedar Rapids native Aman Aminzay, 00BA, has found refuge at Iowa City's Prentiss Street mosque. "I became more adherent to the faith of Islam about four years ago," he says. "Since then, it has given me strength and inner tranquility that I continuously try to cultivate."

On the receiving end of religious education as an undergraduate, Aman Aminzay, 00BA, now plays the role of educator. For more than a year now, he has produced the television program, Getting to Know Islam, which airs Tuesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 to 2 p.m. on Iowa City's public access channel 2.

"One of my objectives is to provide a source for Muslims and non-Muslims to learn about aspects of Islam from a Muslim perspective," he says. "I look for programming that will attract a variety of people and clear up misconceptions."

Aminzay previews professionally produced videotapes with names like Islam: A Closer Look, Choosing Islam, and Hijab: An Act of Faith, airing those he finds informative and entertaining. Response for the program has been positive, and Aminzay plans to produce the show for as long as med school keeps him at the UI.

"I hope people will take advantage of this opportunity to discover the beautiful faith of Islam," he says.
