The San Francisco of the Midwest is what Dubuque, Iowa has been called many times. With it’s beautiful location along the Mississippi River and historic architecture, you will easily be able to see why Dubuque, Iowa has earned that name.

Since Dubuque, Iowa is the oldest city in Iowa, it is no wonder that downtown Dubuque offers much to do and history to appreciate.

There are many quaint restaurants and shops. The Victorian architecture downtown is breathtaking. The Fenelon Place Elevator will take you up to a view of three states, Wisconsin, Illinois and, of course, Iowa. It is the steepest and shortest railway in the world. You can spend the day just exploring the historic sites.

For more history, you can visit and tour some of the original homes. The Mathias Ham House has is located near the Eagle Point Park. It has Victorian furniture and costumed guides. It will truly take you back in time. You can also enjoy a five course meal on the Historic House Tour and Progressive Dinner. It will take you on a tour of some of the most beautiful homes in Dubuque.

You can not visit Dubuque without spending some time on or near the Mississippi River. There are many day and overnight excursions on yachts which offer dining and sightseeing. The Spirit of Dubuque is a true paddle wheeler. It is also the only one in Iowa. You may just like a relaxing stroll down the Mississippi Riverwalk. The Alliant Energy Amphitheater offers tons of concerts and events all year long.

The kids will definitely enjoy a night’s stay at the Grand Harbor Resort and Waterpark. The water park is an indoor park featuring tube and body slides. It has a children’s area for the little ones to splash and play. The rooms offer great views of downtown or the river.

The whole family will enjoy a visit to the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium.

For some adult fun, there are a couple of gaming establishments to enjoy. Diamond Jo Casino offers slots and table games. A bowling alley is located at the casino. Diamond Jo Casino has several great places to dine, including a buffet.
