Support the Scottish Highlanders Alumni & Friends Group

In order to preserve the history of the Scottish Highlanders, we need your help. Please join us in supporting these two special projects that will ensure the story of the Scottish Highlanders will be shared for years to come.

Scrapbooks Preservation

More than 50 years ago, Nadine Thornton diligently and faithfully created scrapbooks of newspaper articles, photos, programs, and other papers of interest, including items from many of our members' hometowns. These fragile items have begun to deteriorate and their preservation is urgent, as they tell our history in detail. We are working to transfer these important documents to a digital format for a more permanent preservation in the archives of the UI Libraries. The University of Iowa Archives has much of the Scottish Highlanders' history to share, including 25 scrapbooks and photograph albums covering its beginnings in 1936 to more recent times. Unfortunately, these volumes are currently available only in our reading room in the Main Library during our service hours. It is difficult, if not impossible, for many of our alumni friends to enjoy viewing these when they wish. To remedy this, the Archives office plans to make the Highlanders' history accessible online 24/7. This spring, staff in our preservation and digital services areas will begin scanning these treasures and adding them to the Iowa Digital Library as a new collection, "The Scottish Highlanders." Images will be arranged and presented just as they appear in the scrapbooks, which are named for the years they cover. Digitizing the scrapbooks will require staff time for production, editing, and technical tasks. Your support will help us bring these memories to the Web, so that all may enjoy accessing them.- David McCartney, UI archivist and Order of the Garter inductee.

If you are downsizing, sorting, relocating, or no longer have room for your Scottish Highlanders memorabilia or Scottish-related items, please consider donating them to help support the Scottish Highlanders fundraising and historical preservation efforts. All donated items not directly placed in the UI Archives, Hall of Fame exhibit, or used for other projects may be sold at the reunion during the Silent Auction. Proceeds will go into the Scottish Highlanders Fund at the UI Foundation. This is a wonderful way for everyone to give back to this important organization.
