Oh, (Big) Boy

By Kathryn Howe

The smiling statue of a cherubic Big Boy hoisting a hamburger into the air turned a national restaurant chain of the same name into an American icon. Miles from his original perch atop a Big Boy franchise in Ann Arbor, Michigan, this particular structure found a new home this past winter at the UI Museum of Art (UIMA). Big Boy's installation—along with several other works that explore consumer culture—marked the reopening of the museum's Sculpture Court. Prior to his arrival at the UIMA, Big Boy was purchased on eBay by John D. Freyer, 02MA, 03MFA, creator of the widely publicized allmylifeforsale.com art project.
