S.T.A.T.venger Hunt 2002

The hunt is over! For 2 weeks members of Iowa S.T.A.T. sent e-mail clues leading students to a medallion hidden on the UI campus. The first STAT member to bring the medallion to the Alumni Association won the grand prize!

The winner, Senior Don Techen received a $300 shopping spree to Coral Ridge Mall. Thanks to all who participated!

Here are the clues that were given:

  • Clue #1
I am the exact same distance from Kinnick Stadium as I am from the University Services Building.

The medallion is located northeast of Kinnick Stadium and northwest of the University Services Building. Though both structures are on different sides of the river, they are the same distance from the Canoe House.

  • Clue #2
Looking for direction? This clue may ring a bell.

The medallion is northwest of the Northwest Bell Building.

  • Clue #3
South of me, in 1880, three buildings were surrounded by fence to keep roaming livestock off the campus lawns.

In 1880, south of the Canoe House, fencing to keep livestock off the grounds surrounded South Hall, North Hall, and Old Capitol.

  • Clue #4
I am located northwest of the building that, from 1893-1904, was the home of Iowa's basketball facilities. Are you getting close?

Close Hall was the home of the Iowa's basketball facilities from 1893-1904. It was located on the corner of Iowa and Dubuque Street.

  • Clue #5
Need a prescription to get in shape? You better head north to find the medallion.

The Canoe House is north of the Pharmacy Building and the Field House.

  • Clue #6
Don't be an April fool! If you're north of me, better grab a coat, you may be pressed for time before frostbite sets in.

The medallion is located near the Kuhl House on Park Road.
Kuhl/"cool", thus references frostbite. Pressed is a reference to the Kuhl House--also the University of Iowa Press.

  • Clue #7
Not Feeling well? Don't try to take a drive by me to catch a glimpse of my unique architecture. Before you finish your tour, I assure you a speedy recovery!

As the Canoe House stores the rowing teams gear, thought we would use some crew lingo. The rowing stroke has four main parts: the catch, drive, finish, and recovery.

  • Clue #8
Near me, a death record is kept, but there are no file cabinets or documents located there.

A plaque is posted on the bridge just northeast of the Canoe House. It keeps record of the most recent diving or jumping deaths from the bridge. Last one recorded: June 15, 1995.

  • Clue #9
Often there is a Doc on duty, but you will not find any nurses, patients, or Band-Aids on my northeast corner.

The Canoe House has a small dock located on the east side, along
    the water.

Thanks for participating! Better luck next year !
