Dr. Ken Magid Child Advocacy Service Scholarship
For University of Iowa Students
Administered by the Iowa Voyagers – A service of the UI Alumni Association
The Ken Magid Scholarship was set up in 2005 to assist UI students in covering expenses related to overseas travel to participate in volunteer service work. The scholarship is administered by the University of Iowa Alumni Association’s Iowa Voyagers.
Linda R. Baker, a 1968 University of Iowa graduate, funds this scholarship that is named in honor of her mentor, Kenneth Magid. As her teacher and role model, Dr. Magid was a tremendous influence on Linda’s own career and service efforts. For more information on Dr. Ken Magid, visit his biography here. In 2005, Linda Baker traveled with the Iowa Voyagers to Romania to participate in volunteer service work. Her time in Romania had such an impact that she wanted to give UI students the opportunity to experience this life-changing trip.
Specifically, the scholarship covers the hotel room, airfare, meals, program materials, and on-site training for students to participate in Operation Romania, a service trip for either two or three weeks. This is a working trip in which students are expected to assist and contribute positively to the life of the local people. Students will be traveling abroad, living in comfortable but basic accommodations, eating plentiful but basic foods, and interacting daily with other volunteers and with Romanian staff. The work currently involves caring for and playing with babies and toddlers in an orphanage or assisting middle-school-age children with English language skills in a school setting. Days begin at 9:00 a.m. and end about 4:00 p.m. Volunteers assist orphanage staff in dressing, feeding, changing, playing with, and interacting with babies and toddlers to help ensure their normal emotional development. Volunteers do not provide medical care. Volunteers working with school-age children participate in creative conversation, reading and other activities designed to improve the English speaking skills of the children. For either position, no previous knowledge of the Romanian language is necessary. There is free time in the evenings and on weekends to tour and enjoy the villages, cities, countryside, and rich Romanian culture.
